Business Information: Black Heart Cafe is a popular local café in Iqaluit, Nunavut, open 7 days a week, known for combining high-quality coffee, casual dining, and significant catering services within a remote northern setting since 2018. It serves a range of breakfast and lunch items—such as sandwiches, salads, soups, and pastries—while also incorporating locally inspired ingredients like Arctic char and caribou into its menu. While serving as a community hub, Black Heart Cafe also offers professional, customized and full-service catering, which is a central part of its operations, supporting events, large orders, and off-site dining throughout Iqaluit.

Work Location: Same as above and various locations across Iqaluit for catering and cargo pick up.

Job Description:

  • Oversee all overnight kitchen operations, ensuring readiness for café service and high-volume catering
  • Established methods to meet work schedules
  • Plan and prioritize food production with a focus on maximizing available inventory and minimizing shortages due to delayed shipments or limited supply chains
  • Supervise and co-ordinate activities of staff who prepare and portion food
  • Supervise and support a small or multi-tasking team
  • Hire Food service staff
  • Train staff on efficiency, cross-functionality, and adherence to standards in a resource-constrained environment
  • Prepare food order summaries for chef: Adapt menus and production plans based on available ingredients, seasonal constraints, and delivery delays
  • Supervise and check assembly of trays
  • Establish work schedules
  • Requisition food and kitchen supplies
  • Monitor and maintain kitchen equipment, recognizing that repairs or replacements may take longer in remote regions.
  • Maintain strict food safety and sanitation standards, particularly important in remote environments with limited inspection access.
  • Train staff in job duties, sanitation and safety procedures
  • Ensure that food and service meet quality control standards
  • Address customer’s complaints or concerns
  • Prepare and submit reports: Maintain detailed logs (temperature, production, inventory) to support operational control and compliance
  • Support cost control by managing high transportation and food costs unique to northern operations
  • Must have knowledge of the establishment’s culinary genres
  • Supervise and check delivery of food trolleys
  • Coordinate and execute catering orders for the following day, often in high volumes, ensuring accuracy and on-time completion
  • Prepare, package, and stage catering orders for early pickup or delivery, ensuring they remain fresh and properly stored
  • Perform or coordinate early-morning catering deliveries when required, sometimes in challenging weather or logistical conditions
  • Delivery of early-morning catering orders, ensuring punctual and professional service to clients
  • Ensure smooth transition between overnight and early-morning teams, maintaining clear communication
  • Pick up of cargo from the warehouse or from the cargo facility.
  • Collaborate with management to continuously improve efficiency, reduce waste, and adapt to changing operational realities
  • May assist in preparing café items (grab-and-go, breakfast, lunch) with an emphasis on efficient batch production and shelf-life management.

 

Requirements:

  • Education: Completion of a community college program in food service administration, hotel and restaurant management or related discipline or several years of experience in food preparation or services are required.
  • Experience: Minimum of 3 years of experience in the field is required.
  • Experience working in a similar work environment is required (Café style restaurant and catering) 
  • A Valid driver’s license is required (for catering and cargo pick up)

Salary: $42.00 hourly, 40 – 50 hours per week
 

Benefits: Gratuities, On-site housing options: Accommodation is provided at a cost of CAD 1,250 bi-weekly for a one-bedroom apartment.

 

Important Information: This role operates on a variable schedule, typically starting between midnight and 2:00 AM, and continuing through 9:00 to 11:00 AM, depending on operational demands and workload. The position requires a commitment of five to six days per week, with flexibility to accommodate peak periods, holidays, and special events. Weekend work and overtime are required.
