About the position
As a very active public collection of over 700 thousand preserved non-insect invertebrate specimen lots with a history of about 150 years, the Invertebrate Collection of the Canadian Museum of Nature provides the physical and data records of a significant portion of our Canadian and global biodiversity. Within the Zoology Section of the Research & Collections Division, the Assistant Collection Manager works closely with the Curator of Invertebrate Collections, as well as the research staff, associates, visitors, volunteers, and interns, to build, preserve, and share this collection as productively as possible.
Handling a wide range of concurrent projects, from meticulous care of fragile specimens to providing museum visitors with a memorable introduction to the collection and the natural history of the many species represented within, the Assistant Collection Manager must both maintain rigorous standards of organization, conservation, and documentation, and remain flexible in response to changing needs and priorities.
The successful candidate is expected to comfortably interact with the public, our exhibit team and with a diversity of internal and external clients and effectively works both independently and within teams.

Eligibility criteria
This position is open to all Employees of the Canadian Museum of Nature and any members of the public who meet the qualifications below.
Candidates must be legally entitled to work in Canada.
Education and training:
Completion of B.Sc. or graduate degree in Biology or a related field (e.g., Zoology, Ecology, Environmental Science, etc.) with emphasis on non-insect invertebrates, or an equivalent combination of experience, education and training.
Language requirements:
- English and French are essential
- Bilingual imperative: CBC
Experience
- A minimum of 3 years’ experience in the management, development, organization and care of natural history collections, with emphasis on non-insect invertebrate collection, including significant practical experience in the management and delivery of collection-related services (for e.g. loan management).
- A minimum of 2 years’ experience in practical application of the taxonomic classification of invertebrates.
- Experience in the identification of a variety of non-insect invertebrates, with emphasis on marine organisms.
- Experience in processing loan and acquisition requests of preserved natural history specimens ensuring compliance with institutional procedures and interacting with Canadian and international institutions and users.
- Experience in cataloging and digitizing specimen records in natural history collection databases.
- Experience with managing large specimen datasets using Excel, including the development, improvement and implementation of data best practices for a collection.
- Experience in carefully handling fluid-preserved natural history specimens, with appropriate health and safety procedures and safe operation of laboratory equipment.
- Experience in supervising a team of technicians, students and/or volunteers, including hiring staff, selecting and assigning tasks, and providing training to support operational activities.
- Experience providing information to internal and external stakeholders on invertebrate collection specimens, including public and media outreach and translating complex scientific concepts into clear language that is accessible to everyone.
- Experience using computers in a scientific environment, including use of common office software (e.g., SharePoint, Microsoft 365 suite).
The following experience will be considered an asset:
- Experience in identifying a wide variety of terrestrial and aquatic invertebrates at the family, genus and species levels, with emphasis on marine species.
- Experience with specimen imaging systems under stereomicroscopes, particularly with the use of image stacking software.
- Experience with national and international regulations as they to natural history specimens (for example, Nagoya Protocol, CITES, collecting permits, TDG, IATA Special Provision A180).
