Pikangikum First Nation is seeking an experienced Controller to join their team! This position offers the opportunity to contribute to the community while providing sound financial practices and accountability. As a Controller the individual will oversee financial reporting, budgeting and ensure the community is audit ready while collaborating with community leaders.
We are looking for a self-motivated skilled individual who is passionate about working within a First Nation community and who has a deep understanding of the importance of cultural awareness. Critical to this role will be honoring the traditions, values and structures of the Pikangikum First Nation community.
Duties & Responsibilities
Financial Oversight
- Ensure accurate accounting standards are maintained for all areas
- Collaborate with Finance Manager and department leaders to address budgets, variances and make recommendations
Budget Coordination & Reporting
- Analyze financial reports, budgets and financial forecasting
- Provide financial insights and recommendations to leaders
Financial Control & Compliance
- Implement and maintain quality control over financial transactions and processes
- Ensure compliance standards are maintained along with best accounting practices followed
Intercompany Reconciliation
- Reconcile intercompany accounts and resolve discrepancies
Transaction Management
- Assist Band Administration with accounting tasks, coding and allocation of funds
Financial Reporting
- Ensure accounting structures align with the community’s financial reporting process
Leadership
- Provide leadership and support regarding financial matters to Band Administrators
Skills & Qualifications
- Minimum 7 years of working experience in Finance & Accounting
- Preference would be a CPA – Chartered Professional Accountant designation; or CAFM – Certified Aboriginal Financial Manager designation
- Post-secondary degree in business administration, accounting, economics, or commerce.
- Thorough knowledge of accounting principles and procedures.
- Experience with creating financial statements
- Experience with general ledger functions and the month-end/year end close process
- Proficient Accounting software and Microsoft Office skills.
- Experience working with First Nations communities or organizations is strongly preferred
- Ability to work remote and travel monthly into the community
