The Opportunity

Reporting directly to the Deputy Town Solicitor, Legal Services, this role is responsible to support the Town’s proactive enforcement of illegal land uses in the Town of Caledon.  This position will assist Municipal Law Enforcement and other Town departments by providing expert advice in the conduct of proactive investigations into illegal land uses, including prosecution of cases through Provincial Offenses Court and management of related civil litigation, including seeking injunctions and contempt citations for large-scale operations.  This position will also provide legal services to the corporation in the areas of civil actions, prosecution, administrative tribunals, by-law drafting, reports and interpretation. This role is critical to ensure the effective working of the Town’s Proactive Land Use Enforcement Task Force and for the achievement of critical milestones and objectives of that Task Force’s mandate.  The Town’s illegal land use mandate may evolve to require representation of the Town in all manner of administrative and court decision-making. The Assistant Town Solicitor, Task Force will also work alongside in-house and contracted subject matter experts in the areas of prosecution and litigation especially in respect of injunctions.

COVID-19: In consideration of the current pandemic and Public Health orders, the Town of Caledon is providing limited in-person services as Town Hall is open to the public by appointment only. The successful candidate for Assistant Town Solicitor, Task Force will be required to work a flexible schedule, including in the office, remotely and after hours (as required).

The Ideal Candidate

We are seeking an enthusiastic professional with a common law degree from a recognized Canadian University or received a certificate of qualification from the national committee on accreditation of the Federation of Law Societies of Canada and membership, or eligibility for membership, with the Law Society of Ontario as a Lawyer. Our ideal candidate has a minimum 3 years related experience, preferably with prosecution of land-related matters and 1 year demonstrated leadership experience and/or supervisory skills. We are seeking an individual with demonstrated interest in civil litigation, administrative tribunal hearings, prosecution, planning and municipal law. Additional experience with illegal land use and the use of prosecutions, civil remedies such as injunctions and contempt citations in order to achieve compliance with Municipal by-laws would be an asset.

The ideal candidate will have knowledge and experience of litigation and municipal law, demonstrated understanding of relevant legislation and computer proficiency in MS Office suite software, CAMS (asset) and online legal research. We are seeking an individual with exceptional verbal and written communication skills and superior report writing skills, demonstrated ability to exercise significant discretion and sensitivity, excellent organizational skills with specialized attention to detail to avoid errors and ability to meet deadlines, and the ability to prepare and successfully negotiate resolutions and solid arguments.

This position offers a salary range of $98,287.28- $121,375.95 plus a competitive benefit package.
