The Department of Physiology & Pharmacology in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Research Associate. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 3 years (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

This position reports to the Principal Investigator.  

The Research Associate's primary purpose is to be responsible for the management, maintenance, and control of the project aimed at understanding the roles and mechanisms of ryanodine receptors and inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate receptors in the pathogenesis of cardiac disorders. The role will include conducting experiments, designing project plans, and mentoring and training of others to achieve the goals of the research project. 

Position Description 

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Perform:
    • In situ confocal intact heart ventricular and atrial calcium imaging
    • ​Intra-luminal endoplasmic reticulum calcium recordings
    • Intracardiac, surface, and telemetric ECG recordings
    • Non-invasive blood pressure measurements in awake animals
    • Immunoblotting and histoimmunochemical staining
    • Data analyses and prepare figures and manuscripts
  • Responsible for management, maintenance, or control of the project
  • Involved in day-to-day supervision of staff, monitoring, planning, and organizing activities of others
  • Assist with plans and designs for specialized applications to meet the needs of research
  • Responsible for presentations in producing figures for publication
  • Produce initial drafts of manuscripts for publication and appropriate scientific journals
  • Participate in the design and development of precision equipment and processes
  • Recommend changes to methods, procedures, and practices within the lab
  • Responsible of the organization of the day-to-day administration of the laboratory
  • Responsible for ordering, and stock checking
  • Responsible for repairs of equipment, ensuring safety compliance
  • Under limited supervision and direction, develop and implement original experiments within the guidelines of the research
  • Conduct literature review, surveys, data analysis and interpretation, laboratory experiments and other research for use in scholarly publications

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Bachelors and Masters degree in Health Sciences, specializing in cardiac sciences required
  • Clinical Medicine knowledge required, MD background an strong asset
  • 3-5 years of Research or Post-doctorial experience in Canada required
  • Minimum 9 years of cardiac electrophysiology required
  • Minimum 5 years of technical experience in intact heart ventricular and atrial calcium imaging, intracardiac, surface, and telemetric ECG recordings, and store calcium recordings in mammalian cells required
  • Minimum 3 years of supervisory experience required
  • Ability to perform detailed design, documentation, and implementation of moderately complex technological systems
  • Ability to provide technical support for other team members through advice on technical lab issues
  • Direct and demonstrable research experience in intact heart calcium imaging and cardiac electrophysiology is required
  • Recommend change to processes or procedures
  • Interact with other members of the team and undertake literature reviews
  • Provide technical support for other team members through advice on technical lab issues
  • Extensive knowledge of theory and practical application of technical procedures and techniques
  • Must be open to learning and development, and be willing to accept new challenges and assignments
  • Understanding of safety codes and standards related to specialization
  • Operate and maintain complex technical equipment
  • Experience with various biological samples (eg. blood, tissues, urine, etc)
