On behalf of our client, Kehewin Cree Nation, we are seeking a Financial Controller to join their team. Kehewin Cree Nation is located in Treaty Six Territory, 20 minutes south of Bonnyville, Alberta. Kehewin Cree Nation focuses on partnerships in programs and in business ventures for a prosperous, safe and healthy community.

Reporting to Chief and Council, the Financial Controller will undertake all aspects of financial management, including corporate accounting, regulatory and financial reporting, budgets and forecasts preparation, as well as development of internal control policies and procedures and financial risk management. The Financial Controller will oversee accounting practices and the maintenance of fiscal records and manage relationships with lending institutions and the financial community.


  • Direct and manage the daily operations of the accounting department
  • Direct all aspects of the accounting operations such as reporting, accounts payable and receivable, general ledger, payroll, budgeting, revenue and expenditure cost accounting, inventory and capital assets reconciliation
  • Direct and prepare monthly, annual and audited financial statements and reports
  • Analyze and present financial reports in an accurate and timely manner, clearly communicate monthly and annual financial statements
  • Develop and monitor the annual budget including forecasting revenues and expenses, and analyzing variances
  • Establish and maintain proper accounting methods, policies and principles
  • Lead, manage and supervise a team of financial administrative staff
  • Assign projects and direct staff to ensure compliance and accuracy
  • Develop and implement operational plans for the accounting and finance function including defined objectives and performance targets
  • Act as a resource and provide assistance and advice to staff with respect to financial issues and the interpretation of financial reports
  • Maintain, evaluate and recommend improvements to the accounting systems
  • Recommend and implement changes as appropriate to improve internal controls and efficiencies
  • Coordinate the year-end audit process including the review and/or preparation of working papers, schedules, analyses and other required documentation
  • Manage financial banking and external professional relationships such as auditors
  • Reconcile all bank statements and monthly financial reports
  • Coordinate and prepare any schedules required for tax returns
  • Prepare funding grant agreements and reporting
  • Ensure quality control over financial transactions and financial reporting
  • Performs other accounting responsibilities as necessary


  • CPA designation required
  • 5+ years of experience in financial management
  • Experience in accounting and computerized accounting programs
  • Ability to interpret and implement First Nations policies, procedures and prepare funding agreements
  • Excellent organizational, time management and prioritizing skills
  • Effective communication skills with individuals at all levels of the organization
