The Department of Microbiology, Immunology and Infectious Diseases in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Research Associate. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 24 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

This position works closely with the Principal Investigator in areas of protocol development, standard operating protocol development, development of research projects and proposals, and contributing to and assisting in submitting research grants proposals.

The lab is focused on immune sensing and immune regulation, with a special emphasis on dendritic cell biology, gut microbiota and cannabinoid signaling impacts on immune system. The lab employs cutting edge multicolor flow cytometry and live cell imaging system to explore membrane biophysics associated immune signal sensing and regulation.

This position will report to the Principal Investigator.

Position Description 

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Under general supervision & direction of the PI, develop and implement original experiments within the guidelines of the research
  • Responsible for:
    • Management, maintenance, or control of a specialized area
    • Ordering, and stock checking
    • Repairs of equipment, ensuring safety compliance
  • Responsible of the organization of the day-to-day administration of the laboratory
  • Involved in day-to-day monitoring, planning, and organizing activities of others (undergraduate students, graduate students, post-doctoral fellows)
  • Assist with specialized applications to meet the needs of operations, research, and services, including assisting under-graduate, graduate, and post-doctoral students with experiments
  • Duties will include the rearing all the lifecycle stages of Nippostrongylus brasiliensis in laboratory
  • Preparing laboratory media and maintaining in-vitro cultures of Nippostrongylus brasiliensis
  • Performs laboratory experiments with a high level of technical competence
  • Participate in the design and development of precision equipment and processes
  • Recommend changes to methods, procedures, and practices within the lab
  • Conduct literature review, surveys, laboratory experiments and other research for us in scholarly publications when required to reliable and safe operation of all laboratory equipment
  • Oversee reliable and safe operation of all laboratory equipment for various users, including stocking of all necessary materials and supplies
  • Keep laboratory and work area clean and safe
  • Responsible for presentations in producing figures for publication
  • Produce initial drafts of manuscripts for publication and appropriate scientific journals
  • Trains other staff and students in the operation of equipment and laboratory protocols

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • PhD in immunology, microbiology or molecular biology required
  • Minimum 5 years experience in the field of biomedical and immunologic science, and cannabinoid signaling research background is required
  • A strong background in immunology, cell biology and quantitative cell-based assay development is required
  • In depth knowledge of scientific, clinical and technical issues for relevant field
  • Knowledge of modern immunology and kept abreast with current literature, IM methodologies and clinical trial design and regulations
  • Ability to perform detailed design, documentation, and implementation of moderately complex technological systems
  • Ability to provide technical support for other team members through advice on technical issues
  • Be able to recommend change to processes or procedures
  • Specialized in multicolor flow cytometry and live cell imaging techniques
  • Experience with animal models of inflammation-related diseases, isolation and culture of primary cells is mandatory
  • The skills for setting up lifecycle of Nippostrongylus brasiliensis and rodent models is mandatory
  • Microscopy skills are required
  • Operate and maintain complex technical equipment
  • Work with various biological samples (eg. blood, tissues, urine, etc)
  • Solid hands-on experience on Flowjo, Image J, SARS, SPSS, Prism
  • Intermediate to advanced skills in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint), Internet skills 
  • Demonstrated experience in project management
  • Demonstrated effective communication skills in English and Mandarin (written and verbal)
  • High level concentration, resourcefulness, and creativity
  • Knowledge of University core business systems is desirable
