On behalf of our client, we are recruiting for a Chief Financial Officer to join their team located in Southern Alberta. Working with and reporting to the Senior Leadership Team, the CFO will play an integral strategic role within the organization and is responsible for the overall direction and leadership of the financial planning function, related business planning, capital and debt management, budgeting and financial reporting. This position is accountable for performance and continuous improvement of the financial planning processes and efficiencies for a group of companies. As a crucial member of the executive team, the CFO will provide strategic advice and management of the company’s financial resources.

Key Responsibilities:

Financial and Administration Management:

  • Participate in developing the strategic plan to advance the company’s mission and objectives, and to promote revenue, profitability and growth of the organization
  • Work with each of the operational and support areas to understand the goals and objectives, key drivers of success, information and measurement systems and processes and reporting
  • Create and establish yearly financial objectives that align with the company’s strategic plans
  • Lead the finance and accounting functions including annual budgeting, forecasting, business planning, reporting, capital planning, debt/equity/share management, audits and cost control
  • Translate the strategic and business plans for financial planning and accounting into operational plans
  • Review prior financial results and discuss anticipated changes to highlight future needs and trends
  • Develop financial models that can reflect different scenarios and can be used in long-term planning
  • Monitor financial performance against budgets and explore, analyze and report variances for discussion and decision-making
  • Identify within a risk management framework, all risks to the organization, and develop and implement internal controls to mitigate these risks
  • Provide financial bench marking and operational guidance on farm management and cost containment to operate a highly productive and high-quality operation
  • Develop a process of assessing and reporting on the overall performance of the organization
  • Maintain effective and efficient accounting systems, processes and practices based on recognized accounting principles, policies, procedures and guidelines while ensuring compliance
  • Oversee the year end audit process including the review and/or preparation of working papers, schedules, analysis and other required documentation
  • Manage the overall financial position of the company


  • Act as a resource and provide assistance to the Senior Leadership Team with respect to financial information, issues and reports
  • Model the organizational culture and performance expectations for all staff with specific leadership of the finance and administration team
  • Provide day-to-day leadership and lead the development of a positive and constructive culture through the facilitation of teamwork, effective change management and ongoing and immediate conflict resolution
  • Ensure effective performance of all team members within the department through the effective establishment, communication and measurement of performance expectations
  • Develop key and operational performance indicators and targets

Performance Measurement:

  • Assess and evaluate financial performance of the company regarding long-term operational goals, budgets and forecasts
  • Provide the Senior Leadership Team and each company leader with historical, current and future projected information and analysis about organizational performance
  • Provide advice and guidance to the Senior Leadership Team about areas of concern and opportunities for improvement
  • Coordinate the development/ renewal of policies and procedures required for good governance and management of the organization
  • Communicate, engage and interact with internal and external stakeholders and maintain relationships with consultants, auditors, and financial institutions
  • Develop, review and approve periodic and ad hoc financial statements and reports as required
  • Oversee policies determined by the Senior Leadership Team and provide regular clear concise reports on the impact of these policies
  • CPA professional designation is required
  • A post-secondary degree in a related field (business administration, commerce or agriculture)
  • Must possess 5 to 10 years in a senior management level financial position
  • Entrepreneurial and strategic business sense, progressive and forward thinker who excels in a fast-paced environment
  • Must also demonstrate the following skills through past relevant leadership and management experience: strategic financial stewardship of company resources; exceptional financial planning, analysis and reporting; organization, time management and problem solving; the ability to communicate effectively with all organizational levels verbally and in writing; operational performance measurements and improvement
