Court Reporting Opportunity – 2 Positions

Purpose of Position

  • To become a proficient court reporter using new technology
  • Record proceedings of out of court matters and hearings
  • Prepare verbatim transcripts as required of proceedings taken
  • To train in the court reporting field to become a certified reporter

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Extensive training to become a certified reporter, requiring online participation of the approved court reporting course
  • Recording matters as scheduled by employer; including discoveries, cross-examinations, judgment debtors, arbitrations, hearings, et cetera, by operating electronic recording equipment as provided by employer, while learning new software and skills
  • Monitoring this equipment to ensure accurate recordings
  • Preparing detailed notes to assist in the accurate preparation of the final transcript using specific software
  • Providing playbacks at the request of those present
  • Preparing accurate, certified transcripts within strict deadlines
  • Ensuring all equipment is in working order by consistently testing equipment before each matter
  • Troubleshooting and reporting any equipment issues to your supervisor
  • Taking note and reporting to your supervisor any other contentious matters
  • Providing excellent customer service
  • Maintaining a professional decorum at all times


  • Keyboarding minimum 80 words per minute
  • High standard of English spelling and grammar
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to speak clearly and professionally in a formal setting
  • Attention to detail
  • Organizational and time-management skills
  • Ability to work independently within strict time frames
  • Ability to take direction and learn from constructive criticism

Please note that there would be extensive training for this position.  However, it would be considered an asset if the applicant had one or more of the following:

  • Court reporter experience at court or another freelance firm
  • Have taken a court reporting course in steno but did not complete
  • Certified Ontario Court Monitor
  • Authorized Court Transcriptionist
  • Commissioner of Oaths
  • Certified by NVRA or CRAO
  • Experience in legal transcription
  • B.A. in English or a related field

Court reporting is a challenging career; therefore, only candidates meeting the criteria will be contacted.  Candidates will be tested for English and reading skills.  This is a career-oriented position, and only those who are interested in training and working towards certification should apply.
