Recognized as the 8th Largest Biotech Company in B.C. in 2016, abm is rapidly expanding and we are offering a Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) Bioinformatics Intern position for a reliable, motivated and result-oriented individual.
The successful candidate will be part of the NGS team to provide our customers with a complete line of NGS and bioinformatics related services. The successful candidate will have plenty of opportunities for career development while being part of a highly diverse, innovative and interactive cohort of scientists.
Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Perform data analysis from DNA and RNA sequencing on the Illumina sequencing platform using existing pipelines for RNA-seq, WGS, WES, metagenome, and other tools. Types of analysis can include but not limited to gene expression analysis, variation calling, de novo assembly, functional annotation, and OTU classification.
- Maintain and optimize existing analysis workflow and update with new tools if necessary.
- Develop and optimize new bioinformatics scripts, workflows and services in accordance to abm’s sequencing services and R&D efforts.
- Assist technical support and BD staff for NGS project consultation.
- Generate data analysis reports for clients.
- Maintain and organize all production and programming records/documents carefully and neatly in detail.
- Assist the senior scientists with on-going R&D projects and bioinformatics needs.
Qualifications : shortlisted candidates will have the following experience:
- A minimum of BSc in Computer Science/Biology/Bioinformatics or related discipline.
- Experience coding in Perl, Python, Shell, or other scripting language. Skills in other programming languages would be an asset.
- Working knowledge of basic bioinformatics tools such as Blast, short read aligners, and variation calling tools.
- Prior research experience or work experience with NGS applications would be an asset.
- Knowledge of NGS library preparation is not required, but would be an asset.
- Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail and ability to troubleshoot
- Strong written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work in a dynamic, fast-paced, team environment.
- Preference is given to Canadian citizens or permanent residences.
