Reporting to the EHS Manager, the EHS Specialist is jointly accountable with the operating management to ensure compliance with Mother Parkers policies and Canadian laws (local, provincial & federal) involving Occupational Health & Safety and the Environmental Protection Act. The position also develops and assists with the implementation and periodic updating of comprehensive safety and environmental programs. Goals of this position are to ensure plant operations are not adversely affecting employee health and safety or the environment. This position is also responsible for the organization and supervision of various special projects as determined by facility management.


  • Develops and implements action plans that address deficiencies in environmental, health and safety programs and Environmental Health and Safety Management System established at Mother Parkers Tea and Coffee.
  • Maintains central environmental health and safety file system and environmental library.
  • Ensures all up-to-date environmental information relevant to plant operations is available in a centralized storage location, e.g. Certificates of Approval for waste disposal contractors, internal and external audits, recycling and disposal information etc.
  • Conducts audits to evaluate compliance with corporate standards and Canadian environmental legislation. Conducts internal audits of facility environmental programs, which include the assessment of environmental risks and liabilities to the facility.
  • Reviews, revises and establishes policies/procedures in the Environmental Health and Safety Management System to identify/clarify corporate standards and environmental health and safety legislation requirements.
  • Evaluates all spill occurrences to determine if incident is reportable to the Ontario Ministry of the Environment. Prepares internal Environmental Activity Report to send to the HR Department for all reportable spills/releases to the environment, complaints, inspections and enforcement notification.
  • Prepares, coordinates, and presents training sessions on environmental topics, e.g. spill response, manifest handling, environmental orientation, recycling programs, environmental procedures, etc.
  • Monitors waste streams and recyclables generated by Mother Parkers Tea and Coffee, such as mixed waste, cardboard and recyclables.  Ensures hazardous waste streams, such as used oil, batteries and parts cleaning solvent, are monitored and properly handled and disposed of according to Canadian legislation.
  • Monitors new environmental health and safety legislation (federal, provincial and local) and its effect on Mother Parkers Tea and Coffee's environmental policies and practices. Maintains up-to-date records of all federal and provincial legislation and proposed changes.
  • Provides technical expertise in special environmental areas such as pollution prevention, waste management, water treatment, spills response, dangerous goods handling, transportation and disposal and air and water pollution control. Manages environmental issues such as water monitoring - i.e., quantities of water consumed and water wastes generated.
  • Aid EHS Manager in ensuring compliance to all Health and Safety Corporate Policies and Programs and all health and safety legislation.
  • Completes all environmental reports with required information, i.e., Scorecard, Resource Efficiency Report etc.)
  • Investigate and coordinate potential for financial incentives in projects at the facilities.
  • Administer and maintain EHS systems and corrective actions (Infolink, Intelex, MSDSonline, Alchemy)
  • Lead external safety programs and maintain associations (Safety Groups)


  • A university and/or college degree, preferably in Occupational Health and Safety OR Environmental Management OR 5+ years experience in a related position.
  • Must have a working knowledge of environmental management systems.
  • Computer literate to use Microsoft Office programs.
  • Knowledge of requirements of an environmental audit and how to perform an audit.
  • Presentation skills to allow for training of environmental issues/procedures
  • Must be a self-starter with the ability to work independently.
  • Must have a working knowledge of environmental health and safety legislation, such as the Ontario Environmental Protection Act, City of Mississauga By-Laws, Spills Regulation and Regulation 347 - General Waste Management, Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations.
  • Must have a working knowledge of hazardous waste management and WHMIS.
  • Must be capable of working with employees at all levels within the company.
  • Requires excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • Requires excellent time management skills.
