The Volunteer’s Role

This role will work to build capacity of the Trias Philippines Southeast Asia office and their partners, to establish and manage their youth entrepreneurship programs. Trias youth entrepreneurship strategy focuses on the livelihood security, connection, and inclusion of the youth in the broad aspects of social and economic development. The volunteer will contribute to the improvement of the strategy. The Specialist will work within the Trias gender and inclusivity framework and action plan, and build on the research of Trias on effective youth programming conducted in February/March 2017. He/she will develop specific parameters for youth entrepreneurship programs at the partner level, and assist Trias and its partners to develop tools and approaches, specific to youth and gender. He/she will assist in the documentation and systematization of the approaches at the partner level.

The Youth Entrepreneurship/Business Development Services Specialist will provide support and capacity building to Trias’ partner organizations in Metro Manila and in the Bicol region. Trias works with 8 membership-based organizations (MBOs) like cooperatives, businesses and trade associations who are composed of family farmers (FF) and small-scale entrepreneurs (SSE). These small-scale entrepreneurs are involved in different industries like food processing, handicrafts, services and others. The family farmers produce abaca (banana hemp), pineapple, dairy and other crops. Membership of these MBOs include women, men and youth from poor, marginalized communities.

As a volunteer, you will:

  • Review Trias policy documents on inclusivity and youth; review Trias research on female youth programming
  • Document and systematize the experience of the partners in youth entrepreneurship programming
  • Study the organizational development plans of the partners. Participate in field visits with the MBOs
  •  Develop the concept of on-farm and off-farm youth entrepreneurship programs per partner
  •  Build the capacity of the MBOs to implement the youth entrepreneurship programs, and analyzes and formulate of learning and best practices

Essential Academic Qualifications:

University Degree in Economics, Social Sciences, or Agricultural Sciences

Essential Professional Background:

  • At least 3 5 years of experience in small scale entrepreneur rural and urban business development, and/or youth economic programs with community and civil society organizations or INGOs
  • Excellent verbal communication skills
  • Training and coaching skills
  • Understanding of participatory approaches to development
